Minor A Hurling

Gurteen was the venue for this evenings Minor A Championship game and although trailing for long periods St. Joseph’s dug deep to snatch victory.
Broadford/Smith O Briens started the better and were two points in front early on; Both points were well taken frees. St. Joseph’s replied quickly as Cathal Ruane grabbed a head high delivery turned his man and scored an outstanding goal in the 4th minute. Broadford/Smith O’Briens were level shortly after as their free taker made no mistake to level the game. They were back in front after a great score from wing forward from play and from the resultant puck out they were two points to the good with a great run and score from the midfielder. Cathal Ruane replied with a score of his own from play. In the 12th minute, the visitors struck for a goal as The Parish failed to clear a delivery that ran across the face of the goal and nestled in the bottom corner of the net. Cathal Ruane pointed midway through half. Broadford/Smith O’Briens had another point and this came from their full forward. Cathal Ruane scored another free before the visitors centre forward scored a great point on the run. Conor Tierney was on target for The Parish in the 25th minute. Cathal Ruane then made no mistake from a free before the Broadford/Smith O’Briens full forward got the final point of the first half.
At half time, the score read 1-08 to 1-05 in favour of Broadford/Smith O’Briens.
From throw in, Jack Hannon pointed for St. Joseph’s to leave two points in the game. Once more Broadford/Smith O’Briens stretched their lead to three points with another point from their full forward. Conor Tierney replied after a great catch and turn. Darragh O Shea landed a superb long range point for Doora Barefield but the visitors responded with a point from a free. They stretched the lead to three as their full forward was yet again on target. Cathal Ruane added another point to his tally in the 10th minute of the 2nd half. Broadford/Smith O’Briens got a superb long range point from their wing forward. Tom Hannan got a score from play as he now operated at full forward. Cathal Ruane added two points, one from a free and one from play after excellent fielding skills under the high ball.Conor Tierney was outstanding in the final minutes, he got a super point after a great run and his delivery along with Cathal Ruane’s great work rate meant St.Joseph’s Doora-Barefield got a second goal. The last point of the game came from Tom Hannan to leave four points between the sides.
