Great team work from Under 14 hurlers results in victory in Under 14 Shield Competition

St. Joseph’s Doora Barefield has an impressive win in the Under 14 Shield this afternoon in Gurteen. The opposition was Ballyea and the final score was 3-13 to 0-1 in favour of the Parish.

 

The team was as follows: Eoin Clune, Jack Power, Cian Lahiffe, Adrian Baker, Cillian O’Riordan, Cian Moloney, Darragh Mc Mahon, Matthew Power, Mark Hanrahan, Dara Nagle, Mark Moloney, Cillian Warner, Diarmuid O Halloran, Matthew Whelan, Morgan Lahiffe

Subs used: Brian Corry, Cian Roughan, Joe Daly, Charlie Mc Guinness.

 

In the opening moments of this game, St Joseph’s full forward line were lively and Morgan Lahiffe demonstrated a great first touch before finding full forward Matthew Whelan who pointed for the home side. From the puck out, Cian Moloney, St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield’s centre back won a free and his delivery found Dara Nagle who’s strike dropped short of the target.

St Joseph’s back line were excellent throughout and Cian Moloney was very prominent at centre back. His clearances coupled with wing back Darragh Mc Mahons interceptions ensured St Joseph’s were on the front foot.

St Joseph’s first effort for a goal came through centre forward Mark Moloney. His well struck shot was well saved by the Ballyea goalkeeper and deflected out for a 65. Soon after, Matthew Whelan added a point after an excellent pass by Mark Moloney. Cian Lahiffe and Adrian Baker combined well in the full back line to prevent Ballyea. Cian had three interceptions and great clearances and Adrian Baker was first to the ball to deny the opposition.

Mark Maloney was unlucky not to score for St Joseph’s as his effort from long range hit the upright. Cian Lahiffe’s interception and clearance found wing forward Daragh Nagle who scored a point on the run for the Parish. Matthew Whelan had a great effort to score a goal but was denied by super defending on the line by the Ballyea defence. From the ’65, Matthew Whelan gathered possession to score another point.

 

In the second half, St Joseph’s opened the scoring through Matthew Power. Dara Nagle gained possession and hit a cross field ball to find Matthew Power, who controlled the ball well on the Hurley and shot low to the net for St Joseph’s Doora Barefield first goal. Darragh Nagle took off on a solo run and scored a great point on the run moments later. Substitute Joe Daly got the second goal as he ground strike found the bottom corner of the net. Doora Barefield’s defence again denied a sure score for Ballyea with a great hook from the resulting puck out. Their tackling was very impressive. Matthew Power was switched from midfield to the forwards and he was next to score after a good delivery from Mark Moloney. Matthew Power scored a third goal after a great strike to the top of the net. Brian Corry added another score.Mark Moloney scored a point before Ballyea added a score from centre forward.Mark Moloney scored a free a long range free and this was the final score of the game.
